Intelsat's geostationary satellites enjoy a bird's-eye view of our planet. The former International Telecommunications Satellite Organization, set up by governments around the world in 1964 and reorganized in 2001 as a private enterprise, provides global fixed satellite services (FSS) over its network of more than 50 satellites. The Intelsat system enables Internet connection, television broadcasting, cellular telephony, and corporate network services. UK private equity firm BC Partners prevailed in a bidding war for Intelsat in 2007, agreeing to pay $4.6 billion (plus $11.4 billion in debt) for a controlling stake in the company.
