This champion is a formidable contender in the lending ring. Champion Mortgage, part of Nationstar Mortgage, is one of the nation's largest retail home equity lenders. The unit originates, sells, and services high-yield home equity mortgage loans secured by first or second liens. Champion deals primarily with one- to four-family residential properties, including townhouses and individual condos, and also originates loans to those who may not qualify through conventional sources. Champion Mortgage operates in more than two dozen states. HSBC Holdings purchased Champion's mortgage loan portfolio for $2.5 billion; KeyCorp sold the unit's loan origination operations to Nationstar Mortgage in 2007.
