Maxim Pharmaceuticals is maximizing its product line. Lead drug candidate Ceplene is in trials to treat acute myeloid leukemia (for which it has received FDA orphan status) and kidney cancer. The firm and Schering-Plough are developing a hepatitis C therapy combining Ceplene with Schering's Peg-Intron and Rebetol. They are investigating the combo for both newly diagnosed hepatitis C sufferers and patients who have not responded to other drugs. Maxim believes Ceplene, which can be administered on an outpatient basis, protects immune system cells and stimulates them to destroy cancer. Drug maker EpiCept announced its intent to acquire Maxim in 2005.
