The tale of one of the world's smallest car makers is a Saab story. Saab's models include the lower emissions producing 9-3 Griffin and the 9-4X (developed by General Motors) cross-over SUV. Offered only through Saab Expressions dealerships, Saab cars have wooed enthusiasts with merchandising that includes pen and pencil sets, martini glasses, and watches. Preparing to separate from GM, Saab filed for bankruptcy protection in 2009. A year later GM sold Saab to Dutch sports carmaker Swedish Automobile (formerly Spyker) for about $400 million. In December 2011 Saab again filed for bankruptcy. Several investors have made bids for the company.
