Avocent tries to give network administrators what they really need -- the ability to be in multiple places at once. The company makes analog and digital KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switching systems used to manage multiple servers. Its LongView extension products let computer users locate their mouse, monitor, keyboard, and other peripherals up to 500 feet away from their CPU. The company also provides systems management software through its LANDesk division. Avocent sells its products to manufacturers such as Dell (11% of sales), Hewlett-Packard, and IBM, and through distributors, including Ingram Micro (13%) and Tech Data. In 2009 Emerson Electric bought the company for about $1.2 billion in cash.
