Pickled organs and preserved tissues are AmeriPath's favorite things. The firm provides anatomic pathology and esoteric testing services to hospitals, doctors, clinics, and clinical laboratories in more than 20 states. Some 400 pathologists in AmeriPath's network diagnose diseases by examining tissue samples; work is performed in more than 40 outpatients labs and in about 220 hospitals. The company enhanced its esoteric testing capabilities with the 2006 acquisition of Specialty Laboratories; esoteric testing involves complex, specialized clinical tests (including DNA analysis and molecular diagnostics) that doctors use to diagnose and treat disease. Quest Diagnostics acquired AmeriPath in 2007.
