Progenics Pharmaceuticals is taking a proactive approach to fighting serious diseases such as HIV and cancer. The biotech company won its first FDA approval in 2008 with Relistor (methylnatrexone), which blocks the side effects of opioids without lessening their pain-killing power. The drug, which Progenics developed in collaboration with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals (now part of Pfizer), was approved as a treatment for opioid-induced constipation in terminally ill patients. Also in the firm's pipeline are a therapeutic vaccine for prostate cancer, as well as monoclonal antibodies for treating HIV and Hepatitis C.
