In Japan, "non-life" isn't creepy, it's just car insurance, and Sompo Japan is one of the biggest players. Voluntary and compulsory automobile insurance combined account for over half of the insurance company's premiums. Though non-life is its largest segment, the company also provides life insurance through its Sompo Japan Himawari Life and Sompo Japan DIY Life Insurance subsidiaries. It also provides reinsurance, asset management, and venture capital. Sompo Japan has announced that it will merge with its smaller rival property/casualty insurer Nipponkoa.
