The people of Tohoku, the northern part of Japan's main island, rely on Tohoku Electric Power for their electricity needs. Founded in 1951, the company produces electricity at its thermal, hydroelectric, and nuclear power plants, which have a combined generating capacity of almost 18,000 MW. Tohoku Electric Power, which ranks fifth among Japan's top 10 electric utilities, delivers electricity to some 7.7 million residential and business customers. Deregulation measures in Japan have led the company to enter new markets, including wholesale gas marketing and LNG supply. The company also has construction, telecommunications, and other operations.
