Transkaryotic Therapies (TKT) has found its niche in niche drugs. Targeting rare diseases, it develops gene therapies that activate malfunctioning genes, prompting them to produce proteins needed for proper operation. TKT's Fabry disease therapy Replagal is sold in some 30 countries, excluding the US; only some 5,000 people in the world suffer from the rare condition. Its candidate for Hunter syndrome (another genetic disease with some 3,000 sufferers worldwide) has received orphan drug status in the US and Europe. The firm earned European approval for anemia drug Dynepo; lawsuits and other issues have kept TKT from launching the drug. In 2005 TKT was acquired by Shire.
