What do cartoon "everyman" Ziggy, advice guru Dear Abby, and archconservative Ann Coulter have in common? They are all part of the Andrews McMeel Universal (AMU) family. AMU operates Universal Press Syndicate, one of the world's top newspaper syndicates. Other people whose work is handled by the syndicate include Garry Trudeau (whose "Doonesbury" comic strip was "discovered" by founders Jim Andrews and John McMeel) and editorial cartoonist Ben Sargent. The company also distributes comics and columns on the Web through its uclick division, and publishes books, calendars, greeting cards, and other items through Andrews McMeel Publishing. Chairman John McMeel and vice chairman Kathleen Andrews own AMU.
