MetroPCS Communications is marching to the beat of a different drummer. The regional wireless service provider offers use of its phone networks, which use CDMA (code division multiple access) technology, without chaining its customers to long-term contracts. Unlike other providers that charge by the minute, MetroPCS offers monthly unlimited usage flat-rate plans for local and domestic long distance services to its approximately 5.4 million customers. It operates in eight states in such major metropolitan areas as Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, Sacramento, and San Francisco. CEO Roger Linquist and CTO Malcolm Lorang founded MetroPCS in 1994.
