Extendicare is extended into the healthcare industry. The company is a real estate investment trust (REIT) operating more than 225 long-term care facilities in North America, with a capacity for more than 25,000 residents. Extendicare offers subacute care and rehab therapy in the US through its ProStep unit and provides home health care services in Canada through Paramed. The company also offers IT, management, and group purchasing services to other nursing home operators. It operates in more than 10 US states and four Canadian provinces. In 2006 Extendicare spun off Assisted Living Concepts (assisted living facilities in North America) and converted itself into a Canadian real estate investment trust.
