Teléfonos de México (Telmex) is no longer a monopoly, but it's still one of Mexico's top providers of fixed-line telecom services with about 18 million lines in service. The company also offers services for managing corporate networks, Internet access services, information network management, telephone and computer equipment sales, and interconnection services to other telecommunications carriers. Carso Global Telecom, a holding company controlled by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helú, owns a 71% voting stake in Telmex. Telmex was originally formed in 1947 by LM Ericsson and taken over by the Mexican government in 1972, which sold its shares in the company in 1990-91.
