It's not Cortez revisited, but Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) -- one of Spain's top banks -- is conquering the New World. Although much of its business activity is in Spain (about 60% of its loans), the company also operates in about 10 Latin American countries through subsidiaries including BBVA Bancomer in Mexico; Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, Chile; and BBVA Banco Francés in Argentina. With some 7,400 offices in 30 countries, the bank offers retail, corporate, and institutional banking; investment banking; asset management; insurance; and securities brokerage. BBVA also operates in other European countries and is expanding in China, as well as in the US, where it owns Compass Bank.
