Equity Group Investments is the apex of financier Sam Zell's pyramid of business holdings. The Chicago-based private investment group controls a multi-billion dollar mix of private and public, domestic and foreign businesses, and more. Zell's real estate portfolio makes him one of the US's largest owners of apartments (Equity Residential) and of property leased by manufactured homeowners (Equity LifeStyle Properties). In 2007 Zell acquired media publishing giant Tribune Company, which also has stakes in the Chicago Cubs; Tribune filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2008. Zell co-founded Equity Group Investments in 1968 and has a controlling interest in it.
