Think of Boston Ventures as just another stage mother. The investment firm focuses on companies involved in media, communications, information, publishing, and entertainment; several of the firm's directors worked for the former Bank of Boston's film-lending group. Its portfolio consists of stakes in nearly 20 firms, including Northstar Travel Media, Integra Telecom, Backyard Broadcasting, and Richard Petty Motorsports, owner of four teams in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series. Boston Ventures, which prefers to be the lead investor in its transactions, is involved in leveraged buyouts, recapitalizations, and industry consolidation deals. It has raised more than $2.5 billion in six funds since its 1983 founding.
