De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited (DBCM) hopes the lure of diamonds is, indeed, forever. DBCM controls the South African mining interests of De Beers, the world's largest diamond miner and marketer. The company's mines in South Africa produce about 15 million carats of the sparkly gem every year with more than half of that coming from its Venetia mine. DBCM was taken private in 2001 under De Beers S.A., a holding company owned by South Africa's Anglo American (45%), the Oppenheimer family (40%), and the government of Botswana (15%). Nicky Oppenheimer, grandson of Anglo American's founder, heads the De Beers operations.
