Avitar was foaming at the mouth to promote a drug-free society...literally. Through its Avitar Technologies subsidiary, Avitar made disposable polyurethane foam products for medical, dental, and diagnostic purposes. Avitar's products included saliva-based diagnostic tests, including drug-abuse test kits called ORALScreen. The company also made wound dressings and custom foam products (molded dental applicators, dressings for orthopedic braces). It sold them through a direct sales force and through such distributors as Smith & Nephew and Quest Diagnostics. In 2008, however, the company sold its foam products business and suspended operations until it could find additional funding and a new line of business.
