It may not turn straw into gold, but Advanced Environmental Recycling Technologies (AERT) does practice a kind of alchemy by turning waste wood fiber and recycled plastics into building materials for homes. Its products are mainly used in residential renovation by individual homeowners, homebuilders, and contractors as a more environmentally-conscious alternative to traditional wood and plastic products used to make decking, railing, and trim. AERT markets its products under such names as ChoiceDek and MoistureShield; they are sold to do-it-yourself retailers like Lowe's through Weyerhaeuser (some three-quarters of sales). The founding Brooks family owns about 30% of AERT.
