Harry Winston Diamond Corp. (HWD) holds a Canadian diamond in the rough. It owns a 40% stake in the Diavik diamond mines, located in one of the world's richest diamond-bearing deposits. Diavik Diamond Mines, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto, owns the remaining 60% and operates the mine. The Diavik mine, which began production in 2003, has a life cycle of more than 20 years; its peak production hit more than 10 million carats annually. With its share of the diamond production, HWD supplies Tiffany & Co. with diamonds, with the rest sold on the open market in Antwerp; Ramat Gan, Israel; and Mumbai. The company, called Aber Diamond until 2007, owns jewelry and watch retailer Harry Winston Inc.
