Carilion Clinic cares for the citizens of southwestern Virginia. Founded in 1899 as the Roanoke Hospital Association, the system today includes hospitals, a network of local physicians, and a research partnership with Virginia Tech. In addition to the eight hospitals it owns, Carilion co-owns one with Centra Health. The system (including affiliates) has more than 1,200 beds. Despite its already hefty size, it continues to expand its operations to include a new children's hospital within its Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, as well as new heart treatment and women's health centers. Its Carilion Behavioral Health facilities include inpatient care.
