Targeting chronic viral diseases and immune disorders, Hemispherx Biopharma hopes to do a world of good with its RNA (ribonucleic acid) and other drugs. The company has acquired the rights to Alferon N, an FDA-approved drug for genital warts that the company is developing to fight other viral diseases, such as West Nile virus. Hemispherx also is developing Ampligen, an intravenously administered RNA drug that is in clinical trials to treat HIV and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Ampligen is also being tested as an adjuvant for vaccines conditions including seasonal flu and bird flu. The compound has received orphan status from the FDA for kidney cancer, melanoma, CFS, and HIV.
