Private-label apparel provider Tarrant Apparel Group (TAG) is no secret to mass retailers. Its specialty is making women's jeans, but it also offers casual wear such as shorts, skirts, shirts, dresses, and jackets, all under store labels. TAG sells to more than two dozen big-name retailers the likes of Kohl's, Chico's, New York & Company, Wal-Mart, Lane Bryant, and Charlotte Russe. It peddles its American Rag Cie brand to Macy's and Alain Weiz-labeled items through specialty and department stores. Products are made by third parties, primarily in China. TAG's offer of $120 million to buy Buffalo Group unraveled in April 2007. Founders Gerard Guez and Todd Kay are looking to take the company private.
