E.ON has transformed itself from a conglomerate into a multi-utility. Subsidiary E.ON Energie is one of Germany's top two power companies (running neck and neck with RWE), with some 11.4 million electricity, natural gas, and water customers in Germany; the unit also has about 28,500 MW of electric generating capacity across Germany and Central Europe. Other utility subsidiaries include E.ON UK, E.ON U.S., and E.ON Nordic. The company acquired Ruhrgas (now E.ON Ruhrgas), Germany's #1 natural gas supplier. In 2007 E.ON acquired Russia-based power utility OGK-4 for almost $6 billion. The next year it dropped its bid to buy Endesa S.A., Spain's largest electric utility, for about $56 billion.
