Just call it Wal-Mex. Wal-Mart de México is the numero uno retailer in Mexico, with more than 1,240 stores and restaurants. These include Bodega food and general merchandise discount stores and Superama supermarkets; Suburbia apparel stores; and some 360 Vips restaurants. It also runs about 250 Wal-Mart Supercenters and SAM'S CLUB warehouses and launched Banco Wal-Mart in 2007. Its stores are located in about 230 cities throughout Mexico, although most are in and around Mexico City. Wal-Mart Stores grabbed a stake in the company in 1991 when it combined its Mexican stores with those of Cifra in a joint venture. Wal-Mart acquired control of Cifra in 1997 and renamed the business Wal-Mart de México in 2000.
