Don't confuse Kyocera's ceramics with teacups and pottery. The company, which began producing technical ceramics nearly half a century ago, makes a wide range of components and fine ceramic products -- including capacitors, fiber-optic connectors, photovoltaic solar cells, and semiconductors -- primarily for customers in the electronics industry. Besides its ceramics and other electronic components, the company makes various types of finished electronics products, including wireless phones, office equipment such as photocopiers and fax machines, and digital and film cameras. Kyocera has about 190 subsidiaries and affiliates around the world; the company gets around 60% of sales outside Japan.
