On a ship, "port" means left, "starboard" means right, and "stevedoring" means heavy lifting, which means a call to SSA Marine, once known as Stevedoring Services of America. A leading marine terminal operator, SSA Marine loads and unloads ships at ports from the US to Chile to Vietnam. The company provides warehousing and distribution services at many of the ports where it operates. SSA Marine does business from some 150 locations worldwide, handling about 22 million container twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU). A division of holding company Carrix, SSA Marine was wholly owned by the Smith and Hemingway families from 1949 to 2007. President and CEO Jon Hemingway owns 49% of SSA Marine; Goldman Sachs owns 51%.
