The firm's 1,800-plus lawyers practice in a wide range of areas from about 15 offices in the US, Europe, and the Asia/Pacific region. Sidley focuses on business transactions and litigation, and the firm's geographic diversity enables it to handle multinational matters. Sidley took its modern form in 2001 when Chicago-based Sidley & Austin (founded by Norman Williams and John Thompson in 1866) merged with New York-based Brown & Wood (established in 1914). The combined firm was known as Sidley Austin Brown & Wood until 2006, when it changed to Sidley Austin.
