One name strikes fear in the hearts of supermarket owners in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and now, Maryland and Virginia: Wegmans Food Markets. The grocery chain owns about 70 stores, but they are hardly typical. Much larger than most supermarkets (up to 160,000 sq. ft.), they offer specialty shops such as huge in-store cafes, cheese shops with some 400 different varieties, and French-style pastry shops. The company is known for its gourmet cooking classes and an extensive employee-training program. Wegmans closed its chain of Chase-Pitkin Home and Garden home-improvement stores in 2005. Founded in 1916, the company is owned and run by the family of founder John Wegman.
