HM Capital, formerly Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst, creates investment pools from investors (pension funds, financial institutions, and wealthy private investors) in the form of limited partnerships. The leveraged buyout firm typically targets underperforming companies in specific niches (including cable TV, radio, oil and gas production, and branded foods), builds them up, then sells them or spins them off in IPOs. HM Capital also has holdings in manufacturing. In 2008 the company closed its sixth buyout fund, worth some $780 million, but its first since co-founder Tom Hicks left the firm in 2006 to pursue other investment opportunities.
