HIP is hip to be square on health care. Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York (HIP) is a not-for-profit HMO founded in 1947 to provide low-cost health care to New York City employees. HIP now boasts some 1.2 million members and is one of the largest HMOs in the New York metro area, as well as one of New York state's biggest Medicare providers. It also offers PPO, point-of-service, and consumer-driven (high-deductable) plan options. The organization also provides access to medical, lab, and pharmacy services through some 43,000 physicians and more than 72,000 locations in New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Along with Group Health Incorporated (GHI), HIP is a part of EmblemHealth.
