Developments at American Retail Group (ARG) suggest the company is due for a name change. ARG is the US retail division of family-owned Brenninkmeyer, a Dutch conglomerate. ARG has sold off all of its 600-plus retail stores in the US, including the Anchor Blue, Eastern Mountain Sports, Maurices (to Dress Barn), and Miller's Outpost chains, among others, but maintains extensive retail operations in continental Europe (C&A) and Brazil. The Brenninkmeyers, who entered US retailing in 1948, are a secretive bunch, sometimes sending their kids to college under assumed names. The brood runs its empire from a secluded compound in the Netherlands and employs more than 200 family members.
