Penn National Gaming is no one-trick pony. The company owns or operates about 20 horse racing and casino gaming facilities throughout the US and one in Canada. Its Pennsylvania holdings include namesake Penn National Race Course and four off-track betting centers. The company opened its Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course in 2008. Other properties include Charles Town Entertainment Complex in West Virginia and the riverboat casinos of Argosy Gaming. In addition, the company manages Freehold Raceway (50%-owned) in New Jersey and Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada. Chairman and CEO Peter Carlino and his family own about 20% of Penn National Gaming. In 2008 two investment firms terminated a deal to acquire the firm.
