Everything's bigger in Texas, including its capacity to store nuclear waste. Waste Control Specialists (WCS) operates a disposal facility for hazardous, toxic, and low-level radioactive waste in Andrews County in far West Texas, on the border of southeast New Mexico. The 1,300-acre site can store up to 1.8 million cu. ft. of class A, B and C low-level radioactive waste more than 100 feet underground. It is licensed to accept waste from nuclear power plants in Texas and Vermont and for treatment and storage from commercial and federal generators such as the Dept. of Energy. WCS, a subsidiary of Valhi, is one of only three private companies in the US licensed to handle nuclear waste.
