While most real estate investors are heading for the nearest exit, Colony Financial is knocking on the doors of opportunity. The real estate finance company, which formed in June 2009 and immediately filed for an initial public offering, will acquire, originate, and manage commercial mortgage loans and other commercial real estate related debts. It is externally managed by affiliate Colony Financial Manager, a wholly owned subsidiary of Colony Capital. Colony Financial plans to use the proceeds from its initial public offering (some $250 million) to first acquire commercial real estate-related loans and assets; it may diversify as opportunities arise.
