In the trend-driven world of women's fashion, The Talbots is a constant. After a flirtation with hipper styles, the purveyor of women's apparel, shoes and accessories has returned to its hallmark classic styles in a bid to right its business. Talbots runs some 585 stores in more than 45 US states, the District of Columbia, and Canada. The chain specializes in selling mostly private-label, classically-styled (some would say dowdy) apparel, accessories, and shoes to women age 35 and older. In 2009 Talbots sold its J. Jill business (acquired in 2006 for $517 million). Talbots, founded in 1947, also sells through about 20 catalogs and its Web site. Tokyo-based retailer AEON owns a majority stake in the company.
