Wal-Mart Brazil ranks as the third-largest retailer in the world's fifth-largest country. Since entering the market in 1995 with just two supercenters and three SAM'S CLUB warehouse stores, Wal-Mart Brazil (WMB) has grown, mainly by acquisition, to number about 315 supermarkets and hypermarkets in more than 15 Brazilian states, including the populous economic center of São Paulo. In 2004 WMB acquired 118 Bompreço stores in Northern Brazil followed by the 2005 purchase of about 140 supermarkets in the south from Portugal's Sonae. Other banners include Todo Dia and Mercadorama supermarkets, and Maxxi Atacado cash-and-carry outlets. WMB is the wholly-owned Brazilian arm of US retail giant Wal-Mart Stores.
