Venerable Lord & Taylor is a Fifth Avenue institution trying not to become a retail industry dinosaur. The department store chain operates more than 45 stores in nine states and the District of Columbia, as well as a Web site. Its stores sell better women's, men's, and children's apparel and accessories, and cosmetics. Services include personal shopping and in-store restaurants at some locations. Its Fifth Avenue flagship store's Christmas windows are a New York holiday tradition. Founded in 1826, the firm has changed hands through consolidation. In 2006 Macy's sold Lord & Taylor for nearly $1.1 billion to NRDC Equity Partners, owner of the Fortunoff jewelry and housewares chain.
