Afren is all about exploring for and producing oil and gas in Africa. The independent company is focused on developing opportunities in six countries across Africa (Angola, Gabon, Ghana, the Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and São Tomé and Príncipe). In 2008 Afren reported estimated reserves of 163 million barrels of oil equivalent. Starting with operations in the Gulf of Guinea in 2004, in 2006 the company expanded by acquiring Heritage Oil's interests in the Republic of Congo. In 2009 Afren established First Hydrocarbon Nigeria Co. Ltd. to buy oil and gas assets in Nigeria.
