ImaRx hoped to produce therapeutic weapons against deadly blood clots and stroke, but its efforts seem to be running out of steam. Under its SonoLysis program, the biopharmaceutical company was developing therapies for vascular disorders, such as ischemic stroke, based on its microbubble technology. Used in conjunction with ultrasound, the microbubbles were intended to break up clots and restore blood flow to oxygen-deprived tissues. After experiencing financial difficulties, ImaRx sold off its sole commercial product (urokinase for pulmonary embolism) in 2008. It then divested the SonoLysis clinical development program in 2009 and is seeking alternatives for its other assets.
