Cell Genesys wanted to be the beginning of the end for cancer. The development-stage company's lead technology was its GVAX immunotherapy platform, which hoped to stimulate a patient's immune system to fight tumors. A GVAX vaccine was in late-stage clinical development as a treatment for prostate cancer and was being evaluated as a possible treatment for pancreatic cancer, leukemia, and myelodysplastic syndrome. The GVAX platform suffered a blow in 2008, however, when its prostate cancer vaccine failed in a key clinical trial. As a result, Cell Genesys halted development of the vaccine and began considering strategic alternatives. The following year Cell Genesys agreed to be acquired by BioSante Pharmaceuticals.
