AutoImmune develops drugs to treat immune system and inflammatory diseases -- or at least it would like to. It believes delivering therapeutic proteins through mucous membranes (e.g., oral drugs) prevents them from being attacked by the body as foreign invaders. Drug candidate Colloral failed to win FDA approval to treat rheumatoid arthritis, so AutoImmune sells it as a nutraceutical through a joint venture with Deseret Laboratories (Colloral LLC). The company licenses its mucosal tolerance technology to other drugmakers such as Teva Pharmaceutical, Eli Lilly, and BioMS Medical.
