TECHNE has biotechnology research down to an art form. The firm's main subsidiary, Research and Diagnostic Systems (R&D Systems), makes cytokines, which are purified proteins that affect cell behavior, and which researchers use to study intercellular communications, cell death, and immune responses, among other things. In addition to cytokines, R&D Systems makes other kinds of reagents, including antibodies and enzymes, as well as its Quantikine assay kits that determine the amount of cytokine in a given sample. R&D Systems also makes blood products used as controls and calibrators for blood analysis systems made by the likes of Abbott Labs; its sells these hematology products primarily to equipment makers.
