This company keeps its eyes on the pies. VICORP Restaurants operates and franchises more than 340 family-style, medium-priced restaurants in about 25 states. Its flagship Village Inn chain is popular for its breakfast menu and pies, while VICORP's Bakers Square chain is known mostly for its selection of fresh-baked pies. (The eateries also serve lunch and dinner.) About 250 restaurants are company-owned, while the rest are run by franchisees. The company manufactures all of its pies at three commercial bakeries; it also sells some pies to third-party customers. VICORP, which was founded in 1958, is 70%-owned by Chicago-based investment firm Wind Point Partners. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2008.
