VeraSun Energy had hoped its profits would rise with the progress of the US quest for energy independence. The company was one of the nation's leading producers of ethanol, a type of alcohol that can be blended with gasoline and used to fuel motor vehicles. In the US, ethanol is made primarily from corn, and VeraSun maintained production facilities across the Midwest. The company also sold a branded fuel, VE85, at service stations there and in mid-Atlantic states. Director and former CEO Don Endres owns just over 20% of VeraSun. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection late in 2008 and filed a plan of liquidiation in mid-2009.
