If you travel to Jakarta, you may find the cigarettes spicier than the food. Clove cigarettes, known as kretek, are extremely popular in Indonesia, which is one of the largest tobacco markets in the world, and the smell of clove cigarettes has practically become the national scent. One of the leading enablers of the country's smoking habit is PT Hanjaya Mandala Sampoerna, also called just Sampoerna. The company manufactures and sells cigarettes under brands that include A Mild, Dji Sam Doe, and Hijau. Philip Morris International acquired control of the company in 2005 for more than $5 billion, buying out the founding Sampoerna family, led by billionaire Putera Sampoerna.
