Nion McEvoy wants to put a new spin on an old magazine. Spin Media was created in 2006 after Nion McEvoy's McEvoy Group acquired Spin, the rock music magazine founded more than 20 years ago by Bob Guccione, Jr. Prior to its acquisition by McEvoy, Spin was owned by Miller Publishing Group's Vibe/Spin Ventures LLC, an entity owned by publishing executive Robert Miller, record producer Quincy Jones, TV producer David Salzman, and private equity firm Freeman Spogli. Miller Publishing bought the title from Guccione in 1997 for $42 million. The San Francisco-based McEvoy Group, which also owns Chronicle Books, purchased Spin for less than $5 million.
