MediaTek develops system-on-a-chip (SoC) designs for wireless communication, HDTV and DVDs, and optical storage products. Its chips are found in cell phones, DVD players, and other consumer electronics. MediaTek is the largest supplier of chips for wireless handsets in China and Taiwan. To counter increasing competition in the feature phone market, it has developed chips for smartphones. The fabless semiconductor company outsources production of its devices to contract semiconductor manufacturers including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC). MediaTek makes most of its sales outside Taiwan. The company was spun off from UMC in 1997.
