China FAW Group pioneered China's auto industry and is still one of the country's leading auto makers. FAW started off as First Automotive Works with assistance from the former Soviet Union in 1956. In its early days the company produced a single model of truck -- it now manufactures a product line that includes light, medium-duty, and heavy-duty trucks; cars; buses; and mini-vehicles. It sells more than 1.5 million vehicles per year. FAW's manufacturing facilities are located throughout China. FAW has more than 25 subsidiaries and a controlling interest in nearly 20 other companies. It operates joint ventures with Volkswagen, Mazda, and Toyota.
